Lesson - Robin Williams

Star Sign: Cancer
Born: Chicago, Illinois, USA
Birth Date: 21st July 1952
Family: Wife Marcia Garces, 3 children: Zachery, Zelda & Cody

Plenty of people think Robin Williams is the funniest man alive, and when he launches into one of his manic riffs, it's hard to disagree.

The only child of a wealthy Ford Motor executive, Williams amassed 2,000 toy soldiers in his parents' thirty-room mansion as a kid. Trained in drama at Juilliard, he was a mime and a stand-up comic before starring as a loony alien in the seventies sitcom Mork and Mindy, a role that made him a household name.

While Williams was dazzling the nation with records, concerts, and TV appearances, his big-screen output was under-whelming. His first leading role was in Robert Altman's disastrous live-action Popeye, and while he redeemed himself somewhat in a The World According to Garp, Hollywood failed to put Williams' improvisational gifts to good use until Good Morning Vietnam, which earned him an Oscar nomination and a Golden Globe Award in 1987.

But while his overall film output has continued to be erratic, he has shown surprising range, tackling dramatic as well as comedic roles, and turning in stellar performances in Dead Poets Society, Awakenings, and The Fisher King. His work as the voice of the genie in Disney's animated Aladdin helped fuel that film's phenomenal, cross-generational success.

After divorcing his first wife, Williams married his son's former nanny. He let her produce Mrs Doubtfire, and she let him ham it up, and the result was a commercial blockbuster that further cemented his standing as Hollywood's most popular funnyman.

His recent string of comedy hits - The Birdcage, Jack, Fathers' Day, and Flubber (a remake of the classic Disney comedy The Absent Minded Professor) - prove that he is not yet ready to relinquish his comedy crown to Jim Carrey, a fact made even more apparent when Entertainment Weekly named Williams the "Funniest Man Alive."

Williams achieved a pinnacle in his career by winning a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his restrained performance as a South Boston therapist in Gus Van Sant's 1997 Good Will Hunting.

Previous to going to Juilliard Acting Academy in New York, Robin studied political science. After Juilliard, Robin played in nightclubs across the US.

Robin has made over 10 feature films, with these movies grossing well over $150 million dollars. He has been nominated for two Academy awards (Good Morning Vietnam and Dead Poets Society), has won several Golden Globe awards and three Grammy's for the audio recordings of "Jumanji", "Good Morning Vietnam" and "Live at the Met".

Lesson: 课文
The Story of Hollywood

When Spanish explorers first entered the area now known as Hollywood, Native Americans were living in the canyons of the Santa Monica Mountains. Before long, the Indians had been moved to missions and the land which Hollywood now occupies was divided in two by the Spanish Government.

By the 1870s, an agricultural community flourished in the area and crops ranging from hay and grain to subtropical bananas and pineapples were thriving. In 1886, H. H. Wilcox bought some land that his wife then christened "Hollywood."

Within a few years, Wilcox had devised a grid plan for his new community, paved Prospect Avenue (now Hollywood Boulevard) for his main street and was selling large residential lots to wealthy Midwesterners looking to build homes so they could "winter in California."

In 1911, the Nestor Company opened Hollywood's first film studio in an old tavern on the corner of Sunset and Gower. Not long thereafter Cecil B. DeMille and D. W. Griffith began making movies in the area - drawn to the community for its open space and moderate climate.

Banks, restaurants, clubs and movie palaces sprang up, catering to the demands of the burgeoning film industry. The needs of this thriving new industry created radical changes in the community causing a clash between older and newer residents.

Acres of agricultural land south of what-is-now Hollywood Boulevard were subdivided and developed as housing for the enormous numbers of workers that movie-making required.

Hollywood has been anything but static, however, and after a few decades as the capital of film glamour, the neighborhood changed again. Although much of the studio work remained in Hollywood, many stars moved to Beverly Hills, and the elegant shops and restaurants left with them. In the 1960s, music recording studios and offices began moving to Hollywood - an offshoot of the nightclubs further west on Sunset Boulevard.

Other businesses, however, continued to migrate to different parts of the city. Hollywood today is a diverse, vital, and active community striving to preserve the elegant buildings from its past. Most of the movie industry remains in the area, although the neighborhood's outward appearance has changed.

In 1985, the Hollywood Boulevard commercial and entertainment district was officially listed in the National Register of Historic Places protecting the neighborhood's important buildings and seeing to it that the significance of Hollywood's past would always be a part of its future.

Dialogue

Jeff: Thousands of young people travel to Hollywood every year.

Joan: What is so good about Hollywood?

Jeff: They go there to see if they can be discovered as the next superstar.

Joan: Do they make it?

Jeff: A few get their big break, but most end up working as waiters!

Joan: That's not really my idea of bejing successful.

Jeff: I suppose we can say that Hollywood really breaks people's hearts.

Joan: Not everyone can be famous.

Jeff: I know! I am one of them!

Air Supply - Lost In Love

I realize the best part of love is the thinnest slice
And it don't count for much
But I'm not letting go
I believe there's still much to believe in

So lift your eyes if you feel you can
Reach for a star and I'll show you a plan
I figured it out
What I needed was someone to show me

You know you can't fool me
I've been loving you too long
It started so easy
You want to carry on

Lost In Love and I don't know much
Was I thinking aloud
Fell out of touch
But I'm back on my feet
Eager to be what you wanted

So lift your eyes if you feel you can
Reach for a star and I'll show you a plan
I figured it out
What I needed was someone to show me

You know you can't fool me
I've been loving you too long
It started so easy
You want to carry on

You know you can't fool me
I've been loving you too long
It started so easy
You want to carry on

Now I'm lost, lost in love, lost in love, lost in love
Now I'm lost, lost in love, lost in love, lost in love

Lost in love, lost in love, lost in love
Lost in love, lost in love, lost in love
